LED Screens vs Projection for Events: Which to Choose

LED Screens vs Projection for Events: Which to Choose

It's one of the questions we get asked most when planning an event: LED screen or projection? Both technologies can display video, presentations or live production, but they behave very differently depending on the light, the space and the content. At Zenor Audiovisual we install both at events across Spain from our base in Albacete, and this honest comparison will help you decide without being swayed by trends alone.

Brightness: the LED's big advantage

An LED screen emits its own light, so it looks perfect in broad daylight, in bright marquees and outdoors. A projector, on the other hand, needs controlled ambient light: it performs beautifully in a dark room, but in a space with large windows or outdoors during the day the image washes out and loses contrast. If your event is daytime or outdoors, LED wins without question.

Size and format: flexibility versus surface

LED screens are modular: they're built panel by panel, allowing panoramic formats, side columns, full stage backdrops or several screens spread around the venue. Projection shines when a large surface already exists to make use of, such as a building façade or a cyclorama, and it's the basis of experiences like video mapping.

Set-up and space required

  • An LED screen needs a structure or truss and a stable power point, but no throw distance is required.
  • A projector needs clear distance between the unit and the surface, with no audience or obstacles crossing the beam.
  • In rooms with low ceilings or narrow spaces, LED is often the only viable option.
  • For quick set-ups in dark rooms and tight budgets, projection is still very competitive.

And the cost? It depends on the context

Projection tends to be cheaper in prepared rooms and indoor events with controlled light. LED requires more equipment and set-up, but it removes the risk: it's always visible, whether or not the marquee holds up against the sun. Our advice is not to decide based on the list price but on the cost of the image looking bad in front of your guests or clients.

The content also decides

If you're going to broadcast live production, remote connections or simultaneous streaming of the event, an LED screen integrates the signal better and keeps brightness constant on camera, which is appreciated when the event is also being watched from home. For artistic projections, mapping on cakes or façades, and immersive backdrops, the projector remains irreplaceable.

Typical cases and our recommendation

  • Conference in a dark room with a tight budget: quality projection.
  • Corporate event with natural light or a streaming set: LED screen.
  • Wedding with video projection at the reception: projector; for daytime outdoors, LED.
  • Concert or festival: LED screen on stage and side panels.
  • Product launch with visual staging: modular LED in creative formats.
