If you've ever wondered how it's possible for dozens of fixtures at a concert to change colour, move and flash all at once, perfectly in sync, the answer has a name: DMX. It's the language professional lights speak, the standard used to light almost any stage in the world. What DMX512 is and where it comes from
DMX stands for Digital Multiplex, and its standard version is DMX512, a protocol created in 1986 by the US theatrical technology institute (USITT) to unify control of dimmers and stage lighting fixtures. Four decades later it's still the universal standard: today's lighting desk can control a fixture that's twenty years old. You can read the full technical entry on Wikipedia, but the idea is simple: a digital signal that travels down a cable from the control desk to each fixture, telling it what to do at every instant.
Channels, addresses and universes: how DMX works
- Channel: every parameter of a light (intensity, red, green, blue, movement, strobe…) occupies a channel with values from 0 to 255.
- Universe: each DMX line carries 512 channels, refreshed dozens of times per second. If you need more, you add another universe.
- DMX address: the number from which each fixture starts listening. A fixture in 8-channel mode addressed at 1 listens from 1 to 8; the next one should start at 9.
- Channel mode: the same fixture can work in simple mode (4 channels) or full mode (20, 30 or more), depending on how much control you need.
DMX cabling: connectors, daisy chain and terminator
DMX travels down cable through 3- or 5-pin XLR connectors, chaining fixtures in series (daisy chain): from the desk to the first fixture, from that one to the second, and so on. Three golden rules: use real DMX cable (microphone cable looks similar, but its impedance causes random flickering), fit a 120-ohm terminator on the last fixture in the chain, and never chain more than 32 devices without a splitter to regenerate the signal. Half of the "ghosts" in lighting — fixtures that flicker or move on their own — come down to the wrong cable or an unterminated chain.
How to light a stage step by step
- 1. Lighting plan: what needs to be lit (people, set, background) and from where: front light to see faces, backlight for depth, side and overhead angles to add drama.
- 2. Choosing fixtures: profile and Fresnel fixtures for the front, moving heads for dynamism, LED bars for background colour, blinders and strobes for impact.
- 3. Rigging and addressing: hanging, focusing and assigning each fixture its DMX address without overlaps.
- 4. Patching at the desk: telling the controller which fixture sits at each address so you can control it by name rather than by numbers.
- 5. Programming scenes and chases: light cues for each moment (presentation, performance, dancing) and sequences synced to the music.
- 6. Full run-through: going over every cue with sound, in real dark-room conditions, before opening the doors.

Common mistakes when working with DMX
- Using microphone cable instead of DMX cable: guaranteed flickering over long runs.
- Duplicate addresses: two fixtures doing exactly the same thing without anyone knowing why.
- Forgetting the terminator at the end of the chain.
- Mixing different channel modes and patching from memory, without checking the fixture's manual.
- Running the DMX line alongside power cables over long parallel stretches, inviting interference.
What about without cables? Wireless DMX and Art-Net networks
When cable can't reach — a facade, a square, a tree between fixtures — reliable wireless DMX transmitters can bridge the distance. And in large rigs, DMX travels encapsulated over Ethernet (protocols such as Art-Net or sACN), moving dozens of universes over a single data cable: this is also how large-scale architectural facade lighting rigs or shows that combine lights with giant LED screens are controlled.
